Attribution Policy
Guidelines for giving proper credit when using Wikimedia content and resources.
1. What Requires Attribution
Any use of Wikimedia content, including text, images, media, and data, requires appropriate attribution. This applies to academic citations, commercial use, redistribution of content, and derivatives.
2. How to Attribute
- Publications: Include a citation with author, content title, source page, and license information.
- Derivative Works: Clearly indicate modifications were made to the original work.
- Commercial Use: Disclose usage rights in all promotional materials.
- Digitized Media: Maintain metadata with rights statements and source information.
- AI Training: If models use Wikimedia data, state this in technical documentation.
3. Exceptions & Fair Use
This policy does not apply to content used under fair use laws for: educational purposes with proper documentation, news reporting, or nonprofit educational research. Always consult legal guidelines for specific use cases.
4. Licensing Compliance
Check the license information (usually Creative Commons) for content you use. Always follow license requirements and include license information when attributing content.
