Interactive Light Sculpture

Kinetic installation where light bends in reaction to user movement, created using React Three Fiber and GLSL shaders.

Interactive Light Sculpture

About This Project

This immersive installation redefines the relationship between physical space and luminous form. The sculpture responds to motion and audio frequency inputs, creating a fluid interplay between viewer and environment.

Key Features

  • Real-time particle trails reacting to sound
  • Multi-sensor array capturing spatial movement
  • Dynamic lighting that evolves with visitor proximity
  • Responsive color palettes based on ambient light

Behind the Glitch

Shader Development

Implemented complex GLSL shaders to create liquid light effects that respond to both audio and movement inputs. The particle system includes perlin noise-based turbulence for organic motion patterns.

Sensor Integration

Integrated with depth-sensing camera systems and environmental microphones. The sensor array captures both proximity data and ambient noise levels to modulate the installation in real-time.

Performance

Achieved 60+ fps rendering with hundreds of thousands of particles through shader-based optimization techniques and efficient memory management strategies.

Development Process

#01

Conceptualization

The idea originated from exploring how light could become an interactive narrative medium. Created initial sketches in Procreate focusing on organic movement patterns.

#02

Rapid Prototyping

Built early prototypes using TouchDesigner and Unity to test physical responses. Refined particle behavior through iterative testing with different sensor arrays.

#03

Implementation

Implemented the final version in React Three Fiber with custom HLSL shaders. Optimized for high performance while maintaining visual fidelity.

#04

Testing & Refinement

Conducted extensive user testing sessions with different age groups to refine the interaction experience. Adjusted sensitivity levels based on real-world feedback.
