Restoring Marine Ecosystems Through Technology

By Dr. Sofia Lin
September 2025
Underwater coral restoration

Our oceans face unprecedented challenges from pollution, overfishing, and climate change. Yet, innovative solutions like AI-powered waste tracking systems, 3D printed coral reefs, and citizen science platforms are creating a new era of conservation. This article explores EEB's pioneering efforts in three key areas:

1. Smart Plankton Mapping

Marine Tech Updated: 2025 Q3

Using satellite AI analysis to monitor plankton blooms - the base of the ocean food chain - helping detect climate impacts in real-time. Our partnership with 120 schools now includes plankton observation kits for student marine research.

2. Citizen Cleanup Network

Community Action 5000 volunteers

Our mobile app crowdsources beach cleanup data, connecting volunteers with local projects while generating scientific datasets. In 2025, we documented 254 metric tons of collected waste through this system.

3. Oceanic Drone Corridors

Marine Tech 2025 Pilot

Autonomous drones monitor marine protected areas with 360° imaging and real-time pollution sensors. These systems enable us to protect 15,000 sq km of coral ecosystems through continuous digital surveillance.
